Merseyrail stations close as network prepares for new 'state of the art' trains

A number of Merseyrail stations have closed as the next phase of work to prepare the network for a new fleet of trains gets underway.

State-of-the-art new trains are set to arrive in the region next year.

Due to the length of time the infrastructure has been in place, during the first phase of platform upgrade work, it was revealed that some further work is required in preparation for the new trains.

The work involves altering the height of the station platforms and realigning tracks to ensure the new trains' sliding step can meet the platform edge.

Merseyrail is attempting to minimise disruption to passengers and neighbours, but some stations are closed with rail replacement buses provided during those times.

Passengers are being advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journey.

Kirkby

Platform upgrade works will take place on the Kirkby line between September 7 and September 15.

  • Between Monday and Saturday rail replacement buses will run between Kirkby and Sandhills calling at all stations.
  • On Sundays rail replacement buses will run between Kirkby and Moorfields stations.
  • From Monday 16 September a normal train service will run on this line calling at all stations.
  • Ticket offices at all Kirkby line stations will still be staffed.
  • Northern (Arriva) trains will run from Kirkby station as usual.

  • Trains from Liverpool to Chester and Ellesmere Port will not stop at Green Lane.
  • Passengers travelling towards Hooton/Chester or Ellesmere Port from Green Lane should board any Liverpool bound train from Platform 1 and change at Birkenhead Central for their onward journey.
  • Passengers travelling from Liverpool to Green Lane are advised to travel to Rock Ferry and change onto a Liverpool bound train which will call at Green Lane.
