Merseyrail services delayed and cancelled after 'signalling problems'

There are disruptions on a number of Merseyrail services following "signalling problems".

The train operator issued the warning today, Wednesday, February 22. It said due to signalling problems at Sandhills, Northern Line services face disruption.

There are some changes to services, including different start and end locations. There are also delays and cancellations on some lines.

The changes include:

  • Kirkby services are starting and terminating at Rice Lane;
  • Ormskirk services are starting and terminating at Walton;
  • Southport & Hunts Cross services are subject to delays and cancellations.

Merseyrail said rail replacement buses have been requested between Walton and Sandhills and are in operation. There is currently also a nationwide fault affecting journey planner and CIS systems.

According to National Rail, there is a problem with 'real-time information' on a number of systems inlcuding journey planners, meaning the app and some train operators' websites are also down. This means some Merseyrail trains will be missing displays.

A spokesperson for the train operator said: "Passengers are advised to check the Service Update page or our Twitter feed @merseyrail before travelling. We apologise to all of our passengers who are affected by this disruption, we are working hard with Network Rail to restore services as soon as possible."
