Merseyrail has cancelled services on its Liverpool Central to Hunts Cross line until Monday due to a cable fault.
Passengers travelling on the popular line will have to get replacement buses after all trains were cancelled from 6.30am this morning.
The rail provider had expected a normal timetable to resume tomorrow however after being unable to fix the fault services will remain cancelled.
A spokeswoman for Merseyrail said: "Train services between Hunts Cross and Liverpool Central are currently suspended due to a cable fault causing the power supply to the third rail to be severely reduced.
"Rail replacement buses are running between all affected stations.
"We have been advised by Network Rail that it is unlikely that services will be running between Hunts Cross and Liverpool Central until start of service on Monday morning, July 22.
"If Network Rail identify the problem and fix the fault before this time, we will reinstate the normal train service well in advance of Monday.
"We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience during this time.
Merseyrail passengers were this morning forced to get replacement buses, which will be in operation until the problem is fixed.
Train officials stress rail tickets and passes will be accepted on Arriva buses.
