Merseyrail issues travel advice ahead of Champions League final weekend

Merseytravel have issued important updates to passengers ahead of one of the biggest weekend's in Liverpool history.

Ahead of the Champions League final on Saturday, the transport network have urged fans to factor in the possibility of extra time and penalties to avoid being stranded, with most services ending at 11pm.

If the Reds secure a sixth European Cup , the homecoming parade is planned for Sunday, June 2 - and it's expected thousands of people will descend on the city to show their support.

The scale of crowds expected for the parade will mean further disruption to public transport - and Merseytravel predict delays could last some time as they work to resume normal services.

As well as the historic Liverpool FC clash, the city will also play hose to the Bordeaux Wine Festival and the River Festival this weekend, meaning passengers need to plan their journeys in advance,

Sunday service provision, with some engineering works on the rail network, will also mean that the transport network is extremely busy.

Detailed information on bus, rail, Mersey Ferries and the Mersey Tunnels is available here - but Merseytravel also issued a list of important advice.

Wayne Menzies, Head of Rail for the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and Chair of the Major Events Transport Board, said: “Both events on the Saturday and the Sunday will put significant pressures on limited weekend transport services. The sheer volume of people and road closures will also bring disruption, particularly to bus services.

“We want people to have a weekend to remember for the right reasons, so it’s essential that you plan your travel in advance so you know you can get where you are going and home again. We also encourage people to keep an eye on the latest travel information.

“We have been working closely with Liverpool FC , transport operators, Liverpool City Council, Merseyside Police and other partners to ensure that we are doing all we can to help people get to the events and home again safely.”

Liverpool FC's Champions League final clash against Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid will kick off at 8pm on Saturday.

Thousands of fans will be heading out to the city's pubs or to specially planned events at venues across Liverpool in the hopes of watching the Reds lift a sixth European Cup.

The parade will take place from 4pm on Sunday, with the players, management and staff taking in an open top bus ride along the waterfront.

The route starts at Allerton Maze and will travel north bound on Queens Drive towards the Fiveways roundabout and Rocket flyover.

From there it will journey along Queens Drive, Mill Bank, West Derby Road, Islington, Leeds Street and The Strand, finishing at Blundell Street.

‘Live’ travel updates before, during and after the parade will be available on Twitter @Merseytravel
