Merseyrail disruption sparked by old train station building catching fire

Disruption was caused on the road and rails when a fire broke out in an historic signal box building.

A blaze hit the disused building at Birkdale station at lunchtime, sending smoke billowing into the village.

Two fire engines were sent to the building, which dates to 1905, shortly before midday and fire fighters were seen on both floors as they dealt with the blaze.

Merseyrail was forced to alter services on the Southport-Liverpool line, with trains from Southport briefly only stopping Birkdale, Formby and Waterloo until running as normal from Sandhills-Hunts Cross.

Meanwhile, officers from British Transport Police closed the road either side of the level crossing as fire fighters dealt with the incident.

A spokesman for Merseyside Fire and Rescue service said it was called at 11:49am and on scene six minutes later.

Two fire engines were sent, with officers using ladders and hosereels.
