Mersey Tunnel rules explained after electric scooter causes chaos

The rules over scooters in the Mersey Tunnels have been explained after a man caused chaos on Wednesday.

A man wearing a dark jacket, short blue jeans and a backpack was filmed riding an electric scooter through the Queensway Tunnel towards Birkenehad.

Riding dangerously close to the tunnel walls, the man looks a little unsteady as he keeps to the far left lane.

The man unavoidably slows down traffic behind as other vehicles make attempts to overtake.

The footage was capture by a passenger in the trailing car who was concerned he was "going to cause a crash".

After ECHO readers slammed the "idiotic" rider, Merseytravel explained the rules around whether electric scooters are allowed in the tunnel.

A spokesperson said that the scooters were not allowed in the tunnel "under any circumstances" and that anyone riding one through would be breaking bylaws and the Road Traffic Act.

In a statement, they said: "E-scooters are not allowed through the Mersey Tunnels under any circumstances and anyone contravening the Mersey Tunnels Byelaws or Road Traffic Act will be subject to appropriate action.

“In this instance, the driver in the video was stopped by Mersey Tunnels Police and given appropriate advice.”
