Mersey Gateway police chase sees men handcuffed on bridge next to smashed up car

A car was chased onto the Mersey Gateway bridge before two men were seen handcuffed close to a smashed up car.

Police attempted to pull over the vehicle in Widnes shortly before 5pm but it failed to stop and carried on towards the gateway.

As the car came onto the bridge, police were able to stop it before arresting the two men travelling in the car.

Witnesses said that the men could be seen in handcuffs while officers looked around and inside of a car that had a smashed windscreen.

Two lanes of the bridge were blocked for a short time during rush hour before Cheshire Police confirmed that two men had been arrested.

The suspects were taken into custody on suspicion of possessing cannabis with intent to supply.

A spokesperson for the force told the ECHO : "At 4.51pm today a car failed to stop for police in Widnes and went onto the Mersey Gateway.

"Two men were subsequently arrested for possession with intent to supply cannabis at 4.54pm."
