Mersey Gateway bridge bailiffs stop pursuing driver debts during coronavirus lockdown

Mersey Gateway bridge bailiffs will not be pursuing driver debts in relation to fine crossings until further notice.

Marston Holdings, the debt recovery firm contracted to carry out enforcement action for the project, announced the move in a statement on its website.

Motorists can be pursued in connection with alleged unpaid tolls and fixed penalty notices related to the crossing, which spans the River Mersey between Runcorn and Widnes.

A statement on Marston’s website said: “Marston has ceased enforcement activity until further notice.

"We will not resume until clear direction is received from the Government and from clients, and until after the current situation has abated.

“We will also liaise with, and seek advice from, the debt advice sector before any resumption.

”We will provide more information in due course.”

Tolls remain in place on the bridge, although there are some subtle changes.

The Mersey Gateway Crossings Board, the special purpose vehicle set up by Halton Borough Council to oversee the £1.86bn bridge project, said on March 18 that it would be “business as usual” for the tolls system.

It announced earlier this week it was shutting its Runcorn walk-in centre after Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s lockdown announcement.

Tolls operator merseyflow has also extended Halton residents’ and blue badge holders’ passes until further notice.

Motorists can pay remotely here via the merseyflow quick pay app, or by calling 01928 878 878.
