Merry party-goers welcome 2019 with a night of cheer across Britain

Party-goers enjoyed a night of seasonal cheer as they rung in the New Year at bars and clubs up and down the country.

Lively celebrations took place in Britain's major cities as revellers welcomed 2019, with tens of thousands of people hitting the town.

Emergency services were braced for one of the busiest nights of the year as droves of people celebrated.

Merry revellers were pictured in Cardiff enjoying the New Year on an unseasonably mild evening, with temperatures reaching about 9C.

Millions of Brits enjoyed firework displays to see in 2019, including 100,000 gathering along the banks of the River Thames on Monday night.

The words "London is open" rang in the new year at the main celebration, which boasted the largest annual display in Europe.
