Merrion Square artists forced to move from pitches at busiest time of year to make way for Euro 2020 village

Over a hundred artists are being forced to move from their regular pitches at the busiest time of year to accommodate Euro 2020.

Artists who sell their work at railings around Merrion Square have been told the will have to move for six weeks in June and July to make way for the Football Festival Village.

As part of the tournament regulations the perimeter of the Festival Village is required to be wrapped with tournament dressing, meaning the artists will have to find an alternative site.

Fianna Fail spokesperson on Dublin, John Lahart, claimed the move could have a "crippling effect" on the artists' incomes.

He said: “The summer months are the busiest periods for artists in the area with tourists in particularly stopping by to purchase local art.

“The suspending of the artists from selling in their regular position is very unfair.

"They pay €240 each year to be allowed to sell on the square and they should not be asked to move.’

Some of the artists have been trading on the square for over 35 years.

Deputy Lahart added: “Artists will loose on a huge portion of their yearly income if they are not allowed sell during the months of June and July.

"The artists are a hugely popular stop off-point for people visiting the city and they should be allowed to remain during one of the busiest periods in the city’s calendar."

A Dublin City Council spokesman said they were are working to identify an alternative location where the artists can display and sell their art.

He added: "When an alternative location has been confirmed it will be communicated to the artists at the earliest convenience."
