Merlins pub in Neath fined and customers face action after group found drinking during lockdown

A pub boss has been fined after customers were found drinking at the venue during the ongoing fire-break lockdown.

A fixed penalty notice, including a fine, was issued at Merlins in Neath following a breach of coronaviru s regulations discovered during an inspection by police and council staff.

Details of eight customers were taken and a Neath Port Talbot council spokesman said work was ongoing with South Wales Police to take enforcement action against them.

The premises holder was handed a fixed penalty notice "and the council is now considering whether any further action may be necessary such as a review of the pub’s current licence," the spokesman added.

Council cabinet member for community safety and public protection Leanne Jones said: “Infection rates are clearly rising across Wales and it is imperative that licensees comply with the current fire-break restrictions.

“The council will be taking a robust and positive approach to enforcing non-compliance particularly when it comes to a minority who are openly and deliberately ignoring restrictions aimed at keeping our communities safe.

“We will also work with licensed premises following the end of the current fire-break period to ensure that obligations and responsibilities are being complied with in line with Welsh Government rules."
