Merewether's Beach Hotel has been listed for sale

Merewether's landmark Beach Hotel has been listed for sale and national interest is expected.

The well-known and well-positioned establishment is prized property on the corner of Frederick and Ridge streets, overlooking iconic Merewether beach.

Lead agent Deane Moore, of Moore & Moore Real Estate, will co-market it with Mike Wheatley, of Knight Frank Hotels, through expressions of interest and said a price guide has not yet been set.

"It's such an iconic, coastal venue," Mr Moore said. "There's only so many coastal hotels along the eastern seaboard of Australia. It's prime real estate overlooking the beach at Merewether and with views to Bar Beach."

The eventual sale will bring to an end over 40 years of ownership of the Beach Hotel by the Bale family, who now share ownership with the Twohill family.

Although admitting it will be heart-wrenching to part with the prized hotel, the matriarch of the family, Joan Bale, said: "All good things must come to an end."

Joan's brother Jim purchased the Beach Hotel lease in the mid 1970s. A decade later the Bale family, purchased the lease from Jim then later acquired the freehold of the hotel from Tooths Brewery.

Relative John Twohill and his wife Lynn were employed to manage the pub then several years later acquired a share of the hotel and the partnership has endured since.
