Mercury star Diana Taurasi to miss at least four weeks of WNBA season with a chest injury

Phoenix star and UConn women’s basketball legend Diana Taurasi will miss at least four weeks of the 2021 WNBA season with a chest injury, the Mercury announced Tuesday.

A CT scan this week has revealed a small fracture to Taurasi’s sternum, which the team says she suffered in the Mercury’s May 16 loss at Connecticut. Taurasi played the subsequent two games before being sidelined.

Taurasi, in her 17th season in the league and seeking her fourth WNBA title, is averaging 15.8 points and 3.8 assists (both second-best on the team) as well as 3.5 rebounds through Phoenix’s first four games. The WNBA’s all-time leading scorer is also just six points away becoming the only player in league history to score 9,000 career points.

Taurasi is hoping to earn her fifth Olympic gold medal this summer in Tokyo with Team USA.

Phoenix (2-2) returns to the floor Wednesday to take on the Las Vegas Aces.
