Mercury Prize disappointment as Newcastle rockers Lanterns on the Lake miss out

Newcastle indie band Lanterns on the Lake have missed out on the Mercury Prize.

The five-piece were pipped to the prestigious music award - and a £25,000 cheque - by Michael Kiwanuka.

Lanterns on the Lake had been nominated for their critically-acclaimed album Spook the Herd.

They were included on the shortlist alongside music megastars Stormzy and Dua Lipa.

When the shortlist was announced, the band - who hadn't released a record for five years - tweeted: "Our album Spook The Herd has been shortlisted as one of the Mercury Prize album of Albums of the Year.

"I cannot believe I just typed that sentence."

However they were viewed longshots by the bookies, who had priced them at 22/1 going into Thursday's ceremony.

And it wasn't to be when the award was announced live on BBC 's The One Show.

Instead the prize went to London singer-songwriter for his album Kiwanuka.

The Mercury Prize is one of the most prestigious prizes in British music, and has helped launch the careers of some of the biggest stars in music.

Past winners have included Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys and Pulp. In 2019, the prize went to rapper Dave for his album Psychodrama.

The annual shortlist is drawn up by a panel of music industry experts including musicians and broadcasters.
