
The temperature rose to 41.1 C in Kumagaya, Saitama Prefecture, at 2:16 p.m. on Monday, setting a new record for the nation, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
The previous record was set on Aug. 12, 2013, when the temperature reached 41 C in Shimanto, Kochi Prefecture.
As a high-pressure area covered the Japanese archipelago, the mercury also hit a record high of 40.3 C in Ome, Tokyo, at 12:49 p.m., exceeding 40 C for the first time ever in the capital. A temperature of 40.5 C was recorded in Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture.
Many locations saw temperatures above 35 C in the morning, and the meteorological agency has issued a heat alert to 39 prefectures, calling for the use of air conditioners.
