Merchant City Festival returns to Glasgow this month featuring aerialists and walking tours

Merchant City Festival has returned to Glasgow and is set to stay all weekend.

The event, organised by charity Glasgow Life, started yesterday (July 8) and runs until Sunday, July 11.

Glasgow Life inspires people to lead richer and more active lives through culture and sport, and it's working as it's been a hit.

The scheduled events promise a much-needed celebration and escape from covid with fun-filled entertainment for people of all ages.

This year's festival will however be slightly different due to covid guidelines and all events will require a pre-booking.

The festivities kicked off yesterday afternoon with the eye-catching Carnival Party leading the way.

Inspired by Baroque Venetian carnival traditions and featuring dancers and stilt walkers, it's been created in collaboration with Bridgeman Arts and Glasgow's circus school Aerial Edge.

Visitors are encouraged to book tables at local eateries and bars on Hutcheson, Brunswick, Wilson, Candleriggs or Bell Street, allowing you to sit, drink, eat and enjoy the unfolding events.

In addition to this, from today until Sunday, the festival will take over George Square where some of it's events will feature aerialists on giant swings accompanied by an interactive soundscape.

And hey, if you're up for the challenge, you can have the chance to swing too!

Councillor David McDonald, Chair of Glasgow Life and Depute Leader of Glasgow City Council said: "We're delighted to be able to share the programme for this year's Merchant City Festival. It is a fantastic line-up of events and I'm certain it will spark some much-needed joy and excitement after such a difficult year.

"Merchant City retailers, restaurants and bars are right at the heart of the city, and I can't wait to see the area light up with colour and entertainment next month.

"We're looking forward to welcoming people from Glasgow and beyond to enjoy the long weekend of festivities."

There's plenty more events to chose from, all of which are free with the exception of the Walking Tour which will cost £5. You can see what events are on and book tickets here.
