Mercedes reinvents the C-Class with 470-mile EV range and ginormous screen

The new Mercedes C-Class promises a range up to 470 miles - (Mercedes-Benz)

Mercedes-Benz has revealed an all-new electric version of its iconic C-Class saloon, marking a significant shift for one of its best-known and best-selling models. The new car sits firmly in the heart of the mid-size saloon market but brings with it a clean-sheet electric platform, fresh technology and a focus on efficiency and comfort.

The new electric C-Class is designed to feel both new and reassuringly familiar. Mercedes says it stays true to the traditional values of the model – comfort, refinement and everyday usability – while pushing into electrification with impressive range, fast charging and more advanced onboard tech.

At the heart of the new model is a 94kWh battery offering up to 470 miles of range. Mercedes is also focusing heavily on charging performance, with its 800V electrical architecture enabling rapid top-ups – up to 202 miles of range can be added in just 10 minutes under optimal conditions. Efficiency plays a key role, too. A multi-source heat pump is designed to reduce energy consumption, while also improving cabin comfort. Mercedes claims that even in temperatures as low as -7C, the interior can warm up twice as quickly as in a conventionally powered model, using around half the energy.

Visually, the electric C-Class adopts a sleeker, more aerodynamic look, with a coupe-like roofline, a more sculpted rear end and stars aplenty. Up front, a distinctive grille features more than 1,000 illuminated elements, giving the car a strong visual identity that separates it from combustion-engined models.

Inside, the focus is firmly on technology and comfort. A large 39.1in MBUX Hyperscreen stretches across the dashboard combining driver information, infotainment and passenger entertainment into a single unit. Mercedes says the system uses a new MB.OS operating platform, which allows for regular over-the-air updates, meaning new features and functions can be added over time without a trip to the dealer.

The interior has also been designed to feel more like a living space, with high-quality materials and features such as massage seats with ventilation and advanced sound systems. A panoramic roof with integrated ambient lighting includes another 162 illuminated stars, designed to add to the overall sense of theatre.

On the road, Mercedes promises a blend of agility and comfort. Rear-axle steering of up to 4.5 degrees helps reduce the turning circle to 11.2 metres, improving manoeuvrability in tight spaces, while AIRMATIC air suspension aims to deliver a smoother ride over longer distances.

Driver assistance systems are also a key part of the package. The latest MBUX Virtual Assistant uses generative AI to respond to natural voice commands, while navigation systems incorporate augmented reality displays and route planning tailored for electric driving.

Practicality hasn’t been overlooked. The electric C-Class offers a conventional boot alongside a 101l front storage compartment, while a towing capacity of up to 1.8 tonnes adds further versatility.

Safety systems include the latest evolution of Mercedes’ driver assistance technologies, with features designed to support drivers in everything from motorway cruising to dense urban traffic. Some of the more advanced systems will be rolled out depending on local regulations.

Ola Källenius, Mercedes-Benz chairman said: “The all-new electric C-Class is redefining the mid-size segment for electric vehicles. Customers will get exactly what they expect from this new version of the beloved model: the perfect blend of performance, comfort, dynamics, and intelligence. On top of that, it is the most powerful and sportiest C-Class we’ve ever built, offering pure driving pleasure and outstanding real-world range – all while being the perfect sanctuary for our customer.”

The new electric C-Class will launch first in the US, with other markets, including the UK following. Full UK pricing and specifications are yet to be confirmed.
