Mercedes-driving dealer's life of luxury with Rolex watches, high-end jewellery, and pricey trainers

A dealer found with up to £10,000 worth of drugs after being trailed by police was also found with luxury items including watches and jewellery worth £26,000.

Hiral Patel, 37, was found in possession of MDMA, cocaine, cannabis and ketamine when he was pulled over by police in Cardiff at around 11.30pm on April 9, 2019.

Officers in an unmarked police car were drawn to Patel's green Mercedes which was driving through the streets of Cathays at speed before he pulled up outside a house and attempted to carry out a drug deal.

Having initially given the police his parents' Cowbridge address they searched the defendant's flat in Curran Embankment in Butetown and found two Rolex watches, a Raymond Weil watch, a diamond ring, a diamond brooch, eight pairs of Nike trainers, and £16,139 in cash.

Prosecutor Nuhu Gobir told a sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday that police began following Patel at Rhymney Street until he stopped outside a house in Norman Street.

A woman approached the car but upon seeing the police she went back into a house. The officers pulled up next to Patel's car and could smell cannabis.

They noticed two envelopes and the defendant told them it was his wages but upon being cautioned he said: "Okay, it's weed."

During the search of the Mercedes police found bags of white powder, envelopes and bags containing green matter, numerous purple and yellow pills, and an envelope containing £500 in £50 notes.

From the defendant police recovered an iPhone, weighing scales, bank cards, and £144 in cash.

Patel was arrested and taken to Cardiff Bay police station and gave an address in Cowbridge but upon attending the property officers were told by the defendant's mother he had moved out two years ago.

On April 27, 2019, police searched Patel's Butetown flat where they found more bags of white powder, green matter, and drug paraphernalia. They also found around £15,100 in cash as well as numerous expensive items.

These items, along with Patel's car, were deemed to have been purchased with the proceeds of crime and were estimated to have a total value of £26,774, with an auction value of £11,830.

Police also found 416 MDMA tablets, 2.6oz of powdered MDMA, three grams of cocaine, 1.6oz of skunk, and 6.6oz of ketamine. The drugs had a street value between £6,854 and £10,797.

Messages on the seized iPhone were also found to contain evidence of the defendant dealing drugs.

He later pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply class A and B drugs and possession of criminal property.

In mitigation barrister Tabitha MacFarlane said Patel, who has previous drug-related convictions, was introduced to drug-taking by his peers but his habit escalated.

She said her client had done charity work for hospital foundations and soup kitchens and had devised a scheme to recycle clothing left at the Glastonbury Festival.

In his sentencing remarks Recorder Dyfed Thomas said he would be unable to suspend the inevitable custodial sentence. He added: "You knew what you were doing. You were trying to keep [the police] away from evidence of you supplying at that time."

Patel was sentenced to a total of four years imprisonment.
