Mercedes driver nearly crashed head-on with lorry in high-speed police chase

A Mercedes driver nearly crashed head-on with a lorry and went the wrong way around a roundabout in high-speed police chases, a court heard.

Banned driver Dion Mayall was first spotted by police as he drove in London Road, Newark, on June 8.

One officer knew Mayall was not a licence holder and turned the police car around and activated the lights and siren.

But Mayall did not stop. He cut in front of other road users and almost collided with another vehicle, Nottingham Crown Court was told on Wednesday, July 14.

The officer was driving at 70mph but was not closing the gap on Mayall's car.

Gareth Gimson, prosecuting, said: "His driving was described as extremely dangerous; overtaking vehicles at speed on the wrong side of the road".

The officer believed Mayall was doing somewhere between 80mph and 90mph.

After he drove away, he was spotted again in the car in the early hours of the following morning outside a supermarket.

Officers were aware of the earlier incident and turned their vehicle around.

Mayall, 18, of no fixed address, accelerated away at high-speed. He went on the wrong side of a keep left bollard and the wrong way around a roundabout, and nearly crashed head-on with a lorry travelling in the opposite direction and with a small vehicle.

Mayall has 18 convictions for 43 offences including having no insurance and aggravated-vehicle taking, assault and possessing a weapon.

Shannon England, mitigating, said: "He accepts the manner of driving was unacceptable and he shouldn't have been driving in the way he did".

Recorder Balraj Bhatia QC told Mayall both pieces of driving involved high-speed police chases.

"It got so dangerous on June 8, when you were overtaking cars at 80mph, it was only a matter of good fortune no one was involved in a collision".

On the second occasion, when he sped away at high-speed, he went the wrong way around a roundabout which led to a blind bend and nearly crashed into a lorry.

Recorder Bhatia said it was so dangerous police were unable to continue that chase.

Mayall was given an overall sentence of 15 months in youth custody after pleading guilty to all charges.

He admitted two charges of dangerous driving, two of driving whilst disqualified and two of having false number plates and no insurance. He was banned from the roads for three years and seven and a half months and will be required to take an extended driving test if he plans to drive again.
