Mercedes driver caught with £86,000 of drugs after police chase

A drug courier was caught with up to £86,000 worth of amphetamine in his car after he engaged police in a chase through Newport .

Rezwan Gafur, 20, was returning from a drug run in Liverpool when the Mercedes he was driving was observed by police who asked him to pull over.

The defendant stopped the vehicle but when the officers left their car Gafur drove off and was pursued by the police as he overtook and undercut traffic while travelling 55mph in 30mph zones.

After about a minute-and-a-half Gafur came to a dead end and while his passenger left the vehicle and escaped he stayed in the driver's seat and was arrested by police.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Monday heard a search of the car's boot revealed a large amount of amphetamine and what prosecutor Jason Howells described as "bash", a cutting agent.

In total police found five parcels of amphetamine in a carrier bag which amounted to 5.28kg and 13% purity. The street value of the drugs was estimated between £42,900 and £85,900.

They also found a small bag of cannabis and a mobile phone but this couldn't analysed after the defendant refused to give them his pin.

Gafur was arrested and he later pleaded guilty to possession of Class B drugs with intent to supply, possession of Class B drugs, and dangerous driving. The Crown accepted the basis of his plea that he acted as courier.

Defence barrister Christopher Rees said his client's dangerous driving was "not the most serious" and he voluntarily stopped and remained in the car while his passenger, who is known to police, did not stay at the scene.

He added that Gafur was "clearly remorseful" and there no evidence to suggest that his involvement as courier was anything other than an isolated incident.

Sentencing, Judge Nicola Jones said: "You have pleaded on the basis you were a courier. By the time you got to Liverpool, there was no doubt you were bringing these drugs back to Wales for some financial gain."

Gafur, of Hereford Street, Newport, was sentenced to two years detention in a young offenders' institute and was disqualified from driving for 28 months.
