Mercedes confident Lewis Hamilton will sign new contract

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff is confident Lewis Hamilton will sign a new contract to stay at the team beyond next season, despite the Briton raising doubts over his future in Formula 1.

After securing his ninth race win this season at yesterday’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Hamilton said, “I don’t even know if I’ll be here next year”, in response to questions over Wolff’s own future.

The Austrian looks on the verge of stepping down from his role in the running of Mercedes’s F1 operation for a CEO or chairman-type position but believes Hamilton will drive for the team in 2021.

Wolff said: “If he were to decide to step out of Formula 1, which I don’t think is going to happen, and I hope it’s not going to happen, we’re going to have a pretty frantic driver market out there.”

Wolff said of Hamilton’s quit threat: “I think it’s the moment, it’s the emotions. We are all happy but tired also.”
