Mercedes-Benz unveils all-electric eSprinter van with impressive range

Mercedes-Benz has recently unveiled its latest addition to the Sprinter van lineup - the 2024 Mercedes-Benz eSprinter. This all-electric van marks a significant milestone in the transition from internal combustion engines to electric power. The eSprinter is equipped with a powerful 113 kilowatt hour battery, providing an estimated range of 220 to 260 miles.

Under the hood, the eSprinter offers two motor options, both powering the rear wheels. The smaller motor delivers 100 kilowatts, while the larger motor provides 150 kilowatts. Both motors offer a maximum torque of 295 pound-feet. The van has a top speed limited to 75 mph, and it boasts a generous cargo volume of 488 cubic feet, with a maximum payload capacity of 2,624 pounds.

It is worth noting that the 2024 Mercedes-Benz eSprinter comes exclusively in a long wheelbase, high roof configuration. In terms of specifications, it aligns closely with its competitor, the Ford E-Transit introduced in 2022. The Ford van also has a limited top speed of 75 mph and a similar cargo volume of 453 cubic feet in the long wheelbase, high roof model. However, the key difference lies in the battery size, with the eSprinter offering a larger 113 kWh battery compared to the E-Transit's 68 kWh unit.

Determining the precise range of the eSprinter can be challenging as official figures are currently based on the 'Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test' (WLTP), Europe's electric vehicle testing process. According to this test, the eSprinter achieves an impressive range of 273 miles in mixed driving and 329 miles in city driving. However, it is important to note that these numbers from the WLTP test tend to be optimistic compared to the more stringent U.S. EPA testing.

To provide a point of comparison, the Ford E-Transit, which also undergoes WLTP testing, achieves a range of 196 miles from its 68 kWh battery. However, when evaluated against the EPA test, the same van only achieves 126 miles, highlighting a range loss of approximately 35 percent. Applying this percentage to the eSprinter's WLTP figures, we estimate a range of 175 miles for mixed driving and 211 miles for city driving. While these figures still exceed the Ford E-Transit's range, they fall short compared to most electric cars on the U.S. market.

Despite this, both Mercedes-Benz and Ford believe that a range between 126 and 211 miles makes sense for van applications. Electric vans like the eSprinter excel in urban delivery scenarios where vehicles typically cover short distances of 3 to 15 miles throughout the day. The lower operating costs, reduced noise, and air pollution contribute to their appeal for small business operations.

During a test drive of the eSprinter near Los Angeles, it became evident that the electric version offered a similar driving experience to its gasoline-powered counterpart, albeit with the absence of engine noise and vibrations. Despite its large size, the eSprinter exhibits a surprisingly nimble and car-like feel. It is crucial for drivers to remember the van's dimensions due to its easy-going nature.

The eSprinter also introduces several notable features, including regenerative braking adjustment through steering wheel paddles, the latest Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) with a high-definition touchscreen, voice control, integrated steering wheel buttons, and a digital rearview mirror for improved visibility. A comprehensive suite of safety technology is available as well, featuring blind spot assist, crosswind assist, and attention assist.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz eSprinter is currently available for ordering, with delivery expected to begin in mid-February. The starting price for the 100 kW version is $74,161, while the 150 kW version costs $77,611. Although these prices exceed the Ford E-Transit's starting price of around $50,000, it is important to consider the eSprinter's larger battery and longer range.

Charging the eSprinter is convenient, thanks to a port located behind the front emblem. Level 2 and higher charging rates are available, with a maximum charging rate of 115 kilowatts achievable at fast-charging stations. In ideal circumstances, this allows the 113 kWh battery to charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 40 minutes.

As we venture further into the era of electric vehicles, electric vans like the eSprinter demonstrate their potential to lead the way, particularly in urban delivery settings. While the transition is still ongoing, the benefits of electric drivetrains, including lower operating costs and environmental impact, position vans like the eSprinter as an excellent solution for small business owners and fleet operators. With its impressive features, comfortable interior, and capable driving dynamics, the eSprinter is a promising addition to the electric van market.
