Mental health support group to highlight World Suicide Prevention Day at Paisley supermarket

A vital mental health support group is looking forward to talking about the help they can offer on World Suicide Prevention Day.

Kickin’ On will host a stall at the Anchormill’s Morrisons supermarket tomorrow between 10am and 4pm.

The voluntary organisation, which uses football as a vehicle to discuss issues around mental health, has been asked to take part in the event.

Group co-founder Mark McKenna said: “We are looking forward to getting along to promote the good work we are all doing together at Kickin’ On, the work we have planned in the future and to reflect and share on the impact that suicide has had on us, as well as people within our group and the people of our local communities and the impact these tragic losses still have to this day.

“Days like this serve as a reminder of these tragedies to us all, and how this shouldn’t be seen as anyone’s ‘way out’.”

He added: “There are other options and we want to put a powerful message out there that we will do all we can to contribute to the ongoing campaign to shine a light on this mental health emergency and to the prevention of such needless and tragic loss of life.

“We continue to carry this message daily and not just on September 10 each year.”

The voluntary organisation, set up by brothers David and Mark McKenna, who have both battled mental health problems in the past, offers members a chance to talk and exercise in a safe environment.

It recently announced a move from its original Linwood home at the Mossedge Centre to the Thorn Athletic Sports Academy.

A number of other stall holders will be in the Paisley supermarket on the day to highlight World Suicide Prevention Day.

The group offers groups support classes on each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday night.
