Mental health services in crisis - tell us your stories

The Guardian revealed today that overcrowding and understaffing in psychiatric wards across the country is so poor that inpatients are scared, bored and their illnesses often exacerbated.

The admissions were part of an exclusive, final interview by the outgoing president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, professor Dinesh Bhugra.

Bhugra also expressed fears that bed occupancy of up to 120% in some wards is resulting in sufferers being released back into society, despite remaining a danger to themselves and others.

His greatest concern, he said, was that fewer medical graduates are choosing to train as psychiatrists - which, when combined with the government's restrictions on hiring doctors from outside the EU, is leading to a "dangerous vacuum" in mental health experts practising in the UK.
