Men 'told to lie down' in street by armed police after 'guns' thrown behind phone box

Armed police descended on a street after reports two guns were found in a carrier bag behind a telephone box.

An eyewitness contacted the ECHO to say that multiple police cars including armed police swooped on Shevington's Lane in Kirkby at around 9.30am on Sunday.

The witness said that two men were stopped by armed police and were told to "lie down" after a carrier bag was "thrown" behind a telephone box.

They said: "It happened around 9.30am and four BMWs arrived with armed respondents and there was about three officers in each car.

"They blocked off the road and told two lads to lie down.

"One of them had thrown a carrier bag behind a telephone box."

According to the eyewitness, they said that officers found ' two guns ' inside the carrier bag and both were led to police cars.

They added that the incident was "startling" and was like "something out of a TV show."

The witness said: "It was startling to see. It was like something out of a TV show.

"But police did a marvellous job, they've got two more guns off the street."

Plain clothed detectives were also reported to have been seen, as they looked around the scene and the eyewitness said the incident lasted around 40 to 50 minutes.

One of the videos taken by the eyewitness shows several police cars parked on Shevington Lane and armed officers can be seen looking around the area.

Another clip shows an officer kneeling down and looking inside a carrier bag near a telephone box, he is then seen holding the bag up and showing it to other officers.

It is then placed inside a police car.

The ECHO has contacted Merseyside Police for a statement regarding the incident.
