Members of a Jewish community in north London have been pelted with gas canisters by men who told them that “Hitler is on the way”, according to local activists.

The incident, which was said to have taken place on Wednesday in the Tottenham Hale area, has been reported to the Metropolitan police.

A branch of Shomrim, which monitors antisemitism and works on behalf of the community in Stamford Hill, said that three men in a pickup truck threw the metal canisters at three separate people, two men and a woman.

Before hurling the objects, they were said to have shouted: “Hitler is on the way to you, Heil Hitler, Heil Hitler, Heil Hitler.”

Shomrim volunteer Michael Blayer said that the shoppers, who were at the Tottenham Hale retail park, were targeted because they were Jewish.

“The verbal abuse was disgusting, and small objects were thrown towards the victims, making them fear for their immediate safety,” he added.

“Shomrim are supporting the victims. The incident has been reported to the Metropolitan police, I have absolute confidence in our local police that this will be thoroughly investigated. I encourage anyone who witnessed this incident or who may have experienced a similar incident to report it.”

The Metropolitan police said that it was called on Wednesday by a man alleging that he was the victim of an antisemitic remark at Tottenham Hale retail park. An appointment has been made for him to make a statement.

Stamford Hill is the centre of the ultra-orthodox Haredi community.

Against the backdrop of a sharp rise in antisemitic attacks around Britain, the area was the focus last year of plans by a racist agitator for a far-right march.

Neo-Nazis held a small march in Clapton, north-east London, in April in an event aimed at the community in Stamford Hill.
