Men seen 'running away' from arson attack where cars set on fire

Men were seen running away from the scene of an arson attack where a number of cars were set on fire.

At around 11.55pm on Thursday, November 10 it was reported that an Audi A3, a Land Rover Discovery and a Vauxhall Astra were set alight at a house on Chiltern Road on St Helens. Three men aged between 30 to 40-years-old were reported to be seen running away from the incident towards Newton Road.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service extinguished the fire and no injuries were reported. A joint investigation by Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and Merseyside Police is underway to establish the cause of the fire.

People living in the area said they heard a "loud bang" and saw police searching in the roads nearby in the early hours of today. CCTV and witness enquiries are being carried out, and anyone with any information is asked to contact police.

Detective Inspector Lisa Milligan said: “We are in the very early stages of the investigation and are carrying out enquiries to establish how the vehicles caught fire. As it was in a residential area I would appeal if any neighbours who saw something suspicious to please contact us as this information could be vital to our inquiries.

“I would also ask residents to please check your CCTV, doorbell and dashcam footage which may be captured how the fire was started.”

Anyone in the area with information, CCTV or dashcam can contact us on 101 or Facebook ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre’ with reference 22000827132. You can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
