Police say two men posed as child protection workers to enter a Canberra home on Sunday and are investigating possible links to a similar unsolved case in Queanbeyan in February.
ACT Policing said the men went to the residence in the North Canberra suburb of Melba at 3:30pm on Sunday, telling the owner they were from Child and Youth Protection Services.
They spent 15 minutes inside and "left without incident," police said.
Checks later revealed the men were not employed with the ACT Government agency.
Police did not say if there were any children inside the home at the time.
But a spokeswoman said ACT Policing is working with NSW Police to determine possible connections to a case three months ago, in which a Queanbeyan mother let two strangers into her home after they lied about being from Family and Community Services (FACS).
In that incident, a man and a woman went to the home in Karabar, just outside of Canberra on February 9 and presented identification purportedly from the NSW Government department.
The mother had said her six-month-old twins were asleep and she could call the pair when they woke up, however the impostors instead said they would wait at the home until the babies were ready.
Soon after, the mother brought the children to the lounge room to meet the strangers, and the pair checked both the babies and their bedroom before leaving the house.
After the visit aroused the woman's suspicions, she contacted Queanbeyan FACS, which confirmed no workers were due to visit the home.
Police urge anyone with information on either case to come forward
At the time, NSW Police's Detective Chief Inspector Neil Grey said the mother was understandably shaken, as the ID looked legitimate enough to fool her.
It is not clear whether the fake workers who went to the Canberra home showed fraudulent identification to the resident, but the ACT Policing spokeswoman said "CYPS workers will always introduce themselves and show ID".
She described them as well-dressed white men in their mid-30s, who spoke with Australian accents.
A NSW Police spokeswoman said police continue to investigate the Queanbeyan matter.
The man who attended that home was white and in his 30s, about 183cm tall with dark black hair.
The woman with him was 170cm tall and in her 20s. She had dark hair with a blonde streak in it, and was wearing a distinctive orange blazer at the time of the visit.
ACT Police urge anyone with information on either incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or visit the Crime Stoppers ACT website and quote reference number 6270716.
They remind people information can be provided anonymously.
