Detective Constable Roy Bromilow said to the ECHO : "This was a sickening attack on a man who had simply asked the offenders to leave private property, where they had absolutely no right to be.
“They chose to very quickly escalate the argument to the point where they used serious violence, with dangerous weapons, and left the victim with very serious injuries.

“It is right that this shocking display of violence has been punished in the courts, and that these dangerous men have been taken off the streets.
"I hope they use the time in custody to reflect on their behaviour, and the significant impact it has had on their victim.”
*A previous version of this story, based on information from Merseyside Police, stated the man in his 70s had been attacked. After further information was provided by police this story was updated to reflect their clarification that it was in fact the man in his 50s who was injured.
