Men Charged With Cutting Down Iconic 150-Year-Old Sycamore Gap Tree

Two men have been charged with causing criminal damage by cutting down the popular 150-year-old Sycamore Gap tree that fell over on Hadrian's Wall in northern England. The incident occurred on the wall built in A.D. 122 by Emperor Hadrian to guard the northwest frontier of the Roman Empire.

The majestic canopy of the sycamore tree, situated between two hills, made it a favorite subject for landscape photographers and a notable attraction along the path along the wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tree gained fame after being featured in Kevin Costner’s 1991 film 'Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves.'

The nighttime felling of the tree sparked widespread outrage, with authorities labeling it a deliberate act of vandalism. Northumbria Police Superintendent Kevin Waring described the incident as 'an incredibly sad day' upon discovering the fallen tree. Hikers and visitors expressed shock and disappointment at the loss of the iconic tree.

After an extensive investigation, Daniel Graham, 38, and Adam Carruthers, 31, were arrested in October and subsequently released on bail. It took authorities over six months to bring charges against the two individuals.

Det. Chief Inspector Rebecca Fenney acknowledged the strong emotions within the local community and urged against speculation or comments that could impact the ongoing criminal case.

The National Trust, which owns the land where the tree once stood, stated that it may take up to three years to determine if new growth will emerge from the sycamore's stump. The trust removed the tree and collected seeds and cuttings with hopes of planting a portion of them in the future.
