Men charged in connection with riot that led to Lyra McKee's death

Police investigating the death of Lyra McKee have charged two people in connection with the riot that led to her death.

Lyra died while observing a riot in the Creggan area of Derry on Thursday, April 18.

Her death sparked widespread condemnation and her funeral was attended by local political leaders as well as Prime Minister Theresa May and Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.

In a statement on Friday evening, the PSNI said: "A 51-year-old man has been charged with riot, petrol bomb offences and arson of a hijacked vehicle.

"A 38-year-old man has been charged with riot, petrol bomb offences and the arson and hijacking of a tipper truck. Both men are due to appear at Londonderry Magistrates Court tomorrow.

"The charges relate to violent disorder in the Creggan area of Derry/Londonderry on Thursday 18th April as part of the investigation into the murder of Lyra McKee. Two males aged 15 and 18 arrested have both been released without charge."
