From heavy breathing to flushed cheeks, women undergo a range of physiological changes when they’re in ‘the mood’.
Now, a study suggests that men can tell when women are sexually aroused , based purely on their smell.
Researchers from the University of Kent claim that men can distinguish between the scents of sexually aroused and non-aroused women.
In the study, the researchers presented male participants with various sweat samples, including those from sexually aroused women, and those who weren’t aroused.
The results revealed that men perceived the scent of sexually aroused women as more attractive, and this increased their sexual motivatoin.
This indicates that the chemical signals of scent alone can elicit a sexual response.
Dr Arnaud Wisman, who led the study, said: “The present studies suggest that men are sensitive to the olfactory signals of sexual arousal released by women.
“This research suggests that these signals released along with corresponding visual and auditory expressions of sexual interest can produce a stronger overall signal that increases sexual motivation.
“Sexual interest may entail more than meets the eye and we hope that the current findings encourage further research to examine the role of sexual olfactory signals in human communication.”
The study comes shortly after a survey by YouGov revealed how often the average Brit has sex every week.
On average, 27% of respondents said they have sex in any given week, including 11% who do it once, 7% who get frisky twice, and 9% who have sex at least three times.
At the other end of the scale, about three in ten Brits said they were sexually inactive, while a similar proportion are having sex, but not every week.
