Two men are facing attempted murder charges over a vicious fight in northern NSW that left another man in a coma.

A 24-year-old man was stabbed, kicked and punched in the face during the fight in Walgett on Friday evening.

Paramedics treated him for stab wounds to the head and shoulder at the scene, after police were called to Dugg Street around 7.30pm.

The man was taken to a nearby multipurpose centre, then by flying doctor service to Dubbo Base Hospital.

He is now in Sydney's Royal Prince Alfred Hospital where he is reportedly in a critical condition in a medically induced coma, NSW Police say.

Police arrested a 21-year-old man at Walgett around 1am on Tuesday. Another man, 22, was arrested at Walgett Police Station around 9.30am.

Both have been charged with wounding a person with intent to murder and wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

They appeared in Walgett Local Court on Tuesday and were refused bail. They will appear at the same court on April 13.
