Men accused of sparking devastating bushfire to fight charges

The pair deny involvement in starting the fire.

Two men accused of causing a bushfire which scorched thousands of hectares and destroyed several homes will plead not guilty to charges linked to the fire.

Shannon Lyndsey Orford, 39, and Harrison William Elliot, 20, are charged with failing to comply with a total fire ban and setting fire to another's property.

The pair were charged in July after a police strike force investigation.

The devastating fire took hold in February 2017, in the Carwoola area near Queanbeyan.

Hot weather and strong winds propelled the blaze, which destroyed eight homes and burnt out 3,500 hectares of grassland.

Vehicles, livestock and properties were also destroyed by the fire, and two firefighters were injured.

In court today, lawyers for Orford and Elliot said the pair would fight the charges, asking for a police brief.

The case will return to court next month.
