If this isn’t a preview of the American Athletic Conference championship, it’ll be close.
Memphis still hasn’t dropped a game thanks to a dangerous offense, a far improved defense from last year, and a not-bad schedule that has a win over Ole Miss, and little else. Even so, in a strange year for the West – SMU is a home game in a month – this really might be the star of the league even with all of the attention paid to the Mustangs, Cincinnati, UCF, and this Temple team.
The Owls have their one weird turnover-filled loss to Buffalo, but the dominant win over Georgia Tech and victory over Maryland were strong. Now it’s a chance to make a huge home statement.
The Owls are owning third downs on defense – allowing teams to convert just 24% of the time – with a pass defense that’s suffocating everyone.
Memphis has an efficient passing attack, its secondary is playing even better than Temple’s, and the O still has its explosive element.
But Temple at home will bring the defense.
The Memphis run defense might have been able to stuff Ole Miss, and he held up well against Navy, but expect a balanced Owl attack that will control the clock just enough to survive one of the better games of the day.
