Memphis Depay puts Premier League clubs on red-alert as he opens door to January transfer

Memphis Depay has issued a come-and-get-me plea to Europe's top clubs but strongly hinting he could leave Lyon in January.

After a disappointing 18-month spell at Manchester United, Depay has rebuilt his career in France with Lyon, becoming captain and their main match-winner.

The Dutch star, who has always had high confidence, is out of contract at the end of the season and is unlikely to sign a new deal.

It means he could be available for transfer in January or if a move fails to materialise, he can sign a pre-transfer agreement to move in summer.

Depay's attributes could be attractive to a number of clubs in the Premier League and Barcelona, who were interested in him during the summer.

This season, he has five goals and three assists in 10 games and speaking after Lyon's win over Saint-Etienne on Sunday, the 26-year-old was asked if he could leave in the new year.

"You ask me about this a lot, but I'm not going to make promises that I'm not sure I can keep," he told Telefoot.

"I think Lyon has to take advantage of my presence here now, and I have to take advantage of being here.

"That's what I try to do every day. You can ask those around me: I like to train, and I try to be positive every day."

Last month, Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman explained why they wanted Depay.

"We wanted Memphis because he is a great player and because he has qualities that we lacked in my opinion: especially depth in our attack," he said.

"Most attackers at Barcelona want the ball to their feet. Memphis can be used as a target man, but he can also come deep. He is strong, dynamic, and can play centrally as well as from the left.

"In principle everything was ready, but due to the rules of La Liga we knew that we had to sell a player first. In the end it did not happen. Too bad, but Memphis also knew what the situation was.

"[Trying to sign him in January] is certainly a possibility, yes. I will try, because I would like to have him here. But I cannot estimate now what the financial situation of the club is like in January."
