Memphis Depay hits back at Manchester United critics over Rolls-Royce incident

Memphis Depay says his life turned 'upside down' during his short spell at Manchester United.

United signed Depay for a fee rising to £35million in 2015 but he left after 18 months for Lyon after starting just once under Jose Mourinho.

Louis van Gaal dropped Depay for the 2016 FA Cup final and United players and staff questioned the wisdom of signing the Dutchman. Depay was criticised for attending a lavish birthday party hours after starting in United's anaemic defeat at relegation strugglers Sunderland in February 2016.

Depay infamously arrived for an Under-21 game at Old Trafford in a Rolls-Royce - the day after his errant pass contributed to a late Chelsea equaliser at Stamford Bridge.

United captain Wayne Rooney, who defended Depay at Chelsea, was informed of Depay's ostentatious arrival at Old Trafford and advised the youngster to be mindful of the image he portrayed.

In a documentary called Met Beide Voeten (With Both Feet), Depay is filmed recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury he sustained last year and the 27-year-old reflects on his time in Manchester, where he scored just seven goals in 53 games.

“My whole life is upside down," the Mirror quote Depay as saying. "They talk about the headlines in papers, me wearing a hat and all the f-----g s--t.

“They say in Manchester I flopped. But let’s go, man. I drive a Rolls-Royce, this is my life. I was not given anything, I have earned it all with both feet. I am not good, I am not bad. Just don’t forget to check my past, check my scars.

“I am a lion, I am a king. I have fashion in my blood and only big dreams. I don’t care what people think about me. It is my life and if I am the black sheep, so it is. I do what I want anyway.”

Depay last week secured a free transfer to Barcelona after four years with Lyon.
