Memory Lane pictures from the past show working life dating back to the 19th Century

Workers, traders, volunteers and unions have always been the backbone of our great city and these pictures from the past show just how vital they've been for the development of the region.

The common work ethic and unity instilled in past generations continues to bear fruit, as shown in these stunning pictures from ‘The Way We Worked’, which represents Part Three of Memory Lane, the ECHO’s six-part supplement showcasing the rich history of Liverpool’s working life.

Part One - ‘The Way We Cared’ looked back at NHS heroes and carers down the decades, whilst Part Two - ‘The Way We Played’ shows sporting memories to treasure.

This week’s edition is packed with yet more precious memories and iconic stories of images from our past.

If you recognise any of the people in these historic photographs let us know in the comments.

One picture dates as far back as 1880 and shows members of Birkenhead’s combined Police and Fire Force, as it was known then, with one of their emergency vehicles.

Another shows a team of road sweepers doing their bit for the war effort in Liverpool in 1916.

A third shows a rare close-up of the Liver Building’s clock as cleaning work was carried out in 1973.

In a picture taken in 1967, industrial unrest is afoot as union members vote for strike action at a rally at the Pier Head.

The Albert Dock, derelict and overgrown in 1983 is shown being cleared by labourers after an agreement was reached on redevelopment of the site.

Part Three - ‘The Way We Worked’ is filled with historic moments - and it's available to order from our online shop .

An additional selection of pictures from this week’s edition will be printed in Tuesday’s (February 9) newspaper.
