Memories of Pip, Squeak and Wilfred

I was moved by the article by John Vivian Hayes who had waited 90 years for his Pip & Squeak annual (Snapshot, Family, 7 March). My father, who was born in Halifax in 1920, was christened Wilfred, a name he loathed. Throughout his life he was known as Pip, taking the name from the dog in Pip & Squeak (rather than Wilfred the rabbit!). Admitting to his real name when working as company secretary in a woollen mill in Keighley, he was embarrassed to learn that his boss was also called Wilfrid. Fortunately this was resolved when the boss’s name was found to be spelt with an “i”, a far superior version of my dad’s common “fred”. My dad died in 2004 and this piece brought back many happy memories of a lovely man called Pip.
