Memorial to murdered teenager Becky Watts vandalised with graffiti

A memorial to murdered Bristol teenager Becky Watts has been vandalised with graffiti.

Vandals have spray-painted the box which holds a plaque in Becky's memory, and which stands next to the "Shine On" lamp.

The word "Hicab" was sprayed, while two other sides of the grey box were also graffitied on.

The memorial was reportedly donated by Becky's college, after the schoolgirl from St George was murdered by her stepbrother and his partner in 2015.

The plaque reads: "In memory of Becky Watts 1998-2015. Your light will always shine brightly. Let it provide safety and comfort to others."

A local noticed the vandalism when they were walking through St George's Park.

They told Express.co.uk: "It's utterly disgusting and whoever did it should be ashamed of themselves. There are lots of graffiti artists in the area but most of them stick to the skate park where no one has an issue with them tagging.

"This is totally different because they've sprayed all over a memorial to a murdered schoolgirl.

"It didn't happen that long ago and is still fresh in a lot of people's minds.

"As if her family haven't gone through enough pain - they've got to deal with this now."

Becky was murdered in February 2015 by her stepbrother Nathan Matthews and his girlfriend Shauna Hoare.

The 16-year-old was suffocated in her bedroom in Bristol and stabbed 15 times after her death.

Nathan Matthews was later sentenced to 33 years, and Shauna Hoare was given 17 years for manslaughter.

Police statement

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "We’re investigating an incident in which graffiti was daubed onto a utilities cabinet in St George’s Park, Bristol, on which a memorial plaque to Becky Watts is mounted.

"The plaque itself has not been damaged and it’s unclear at this time when the offence was committed.

"An officer with the neighbourhood policing team is attending the park to assess the damage and we will be updating the family of Becky Watts on the damage caused.

"If anyone has information about this criminal damage, please call us on 101."
