Memorial service to be held for tragic Mayo man John Heneghan and wife Caitlyn Holtzman who died in New York crash

A memorial service and cremation will be held in the US for a tragic Irishman who died in a horrific crash along with his young wife.

Mayo native John Heneghan, 33, and his wife Caitlyn Holtzman (Heneghan), 32, died in Clifton Park, near Albany on Saturday.

The tragic accident occurred when a vehicle travelling southbound on State Route 9 switched lane and crashed into Mr Henegan's car, which had four other passengers.

A death notice on RIP.ie reads: "John Heneghan, New York, USA, and later of Gorteenmore, Tourmakeady, Co Mayo and his wife Caitlin Holtzman, tragically. Very deeply regretted by their loving families and friends.

"Cremation of the remains and Memorial Service will take place in the USA followed by Funeral Mass/Memorial Service in Tourmakeady and interment of ashes.

"Arrangements will be announced later."

Two other Irish men, Luke O’Doherty and Enda Crowley, both 25, were also seriously injured in the crash but it is understood that their injuries are not life threatening.

Also travelling in the car was Julia Staples, 24, who is American.

The three injured passengers were transported to Albany Medical Centre for treatment.

In a statement, New York State Police said: “Shortly before 3:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, Troopers responded to a motor vehicle accident that occurred at the intersection of State Route 9 and Ushers Rd in the town of Clifton Park.

“A vehicle traveling southbound on State Route 9 left its lane of travel, and struck another vehicle that had been traveling east on Ushers Rd. and was stopped for the traffic light at the intersection of State Route 9.

“The driver of the southbound vehicle is in police custody as the accident continues to be investigated. State Police are confirming that two people were killed, and three seriously injured in the stopped vehicle.

“Anyone who may have witnessed the accident, or has any information, is asked to contact SP Clifton Park at 518-583-7000.

New York State Police have confirmed that a 58-year-old man was arrested at the scene for “aggravated vehicular homicide, two counts of vehicular manslaughter, and driving while intoxicated”.

The man was remanded to Saratoga County Jail without bail. He is due back in court on May 29, 2019 at 4:00 p.m.

A close relative of Caitlyn shared a picture of John and Caitlyn’s wedding day in 2017.

She said: “It all doesn’t feel real... It feels like a dream.”
