A new memorial park opened Sunday in the Minamihama district of Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, which was decimated in the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, and townspeople visited to offer prayers to disaster victims.
Ishinomaki Minamihama Tsunami Memorial Park, constructed by the central, prefectural and city governments, was built on the site of a 388,000-square-meter residential area that was destroyed by tsunami.
Among the facilities at the park are a memorial cenotaph inscribed with the names of disaster victims, a well-known sign saying "Ganbaro Ishinomaki!" or "Cheer up Ishinomaki!" that has long encouraged residents, and the Miyagi 3.11 Tsunami Disaster Memorial Museum.
The museum is currently closed in response to the prefecture's declaration of a state of emergency due to the spread of coronavirus infections.
