Memorial notes: Phil Mickelson on his two-driver philosophy

DUBLIN, Ohio _ Phil Mickelson won the Masters in 2006 using two drivers. He employed the strategy again Thursday, explaining that Muirfield Village is designed with two drivers in mind. At least his mind.

"I want to hit little cuts in play, because we come up to the U.S. Open and British and some of these other events (where) I need to put the ball in play," he said. "Yet here there are six times where if you can fly it 325, it opens up. ... I've got a driver I've been using that I can fly it that far."

Lefty got a little more loose on social media when he released a selfie video of himself explaining the reasoning behind putting two drivers in his bag. A sampling:

"This is the first time in a long time that I've used two drivers," he said. "Why such a change of heart? Well, I saw a post of Bubba Watson hitting bombs without a shirt on, and he had bear chest hair, and I don't mean B-A-R-E chest hair, I mean grizzly bear chest hair, and thought, 'If I have to have that to hit bombs, I don't want to hit bombs.'

"So I have a shorter driver where I can hit cute little cuts into the fairway, but then I realized when I was not hitting bombs, my confidence was low, my self-esteem was low. Oftentimes, I wouldn't want to get out of bed. So when I started hitting bombs, my confidence shot back up and my testosterone came back. My overall attractiveness increased. So I'm going to have a driver to hit cute cuts in the fairway and to hit bombs."

Mickelson shot 2-under-par 70 but knows he needs to make more birdies Friday. With both cute cuts and bombs.
