Memorial garden to former head teacher Sue Bain unveiled at Dalbeattie Learning Campus

It was a poignant moment at Dalbeattie Learning Campus on Friday when a memorial plaque and garden were unveiled in honour of former high school head teacher Sue Bain.

Staff, students and representatives of the community and Dumfries and Galloway Council all attended the emotional occasion.

Mrs Bain was head teacher at Dalbeattie High from January, 2010, until her untimely death in December, 2015.

Principal teacher Alistair Bremner said: “Sue was loved and respected by everyone with whom she came into contact both within the school and in the wider community.

“And as ‘Da’beattie heidie’ she demonstrated her ‘work hard, play hard’ mantra consistently during the five years we had the privilege of working with her.

“Sue was here from 2010 to 2015 which was when all the initial planning went in for the new school building.

“A lot of the features in the school were her vision – but unfortunately she never lived to see it.

“In our hospitality suite there is a professional kitchen and our automotive workshop is a proper garage. Both were part of Sue’s vision.”

Mr Bremner added: “It was quite an emotional day. The creation of the memorial garden is fitting tribute to a very special lady.”

Current acting head teacher Alison Chambers had previously pledged that she would ensure there would be an area designated on the campus for Sue’s memorial garden to allow current and future members of the school community a space for personal reflection.
