Memorial dedicated to Bury man who died in Manchester Arena bombing unveiled in heart of his hometown

A memorial dedicated to a Bury man who died in the Manchester Arena bombing has been unveiled.

The sculpture, in memory of John Atkinson, is the heart of his hometown of Radcliffe. It was unveiled on Friday.

Dozens of friends and family members gathered in the town's piazza, off Blackburn Street, to remember John - described as a 'loving, kind and caring' man.

The memorial features a bee, which has come to symbolise the spirit of unity which brought people together in the aftermath of the tragedy.

An inscription on top of the sculpture's plinth bears John’s name and image.

John, who worked as a support worker for children with autism, was 28 when he died in the atrocity, which claimed the lives of 21 on May 22, 2017.

John's mother Daryl and step-dad Kevan Price attended the unveiling of the memorial sculpture, along with Radcliffe councillor Sharon Briggs.

Coun Briggs, the cabinet member for communities, said: "We will never forget those who died in the bombing, and I hope this memorial gives John’s family some comfort and serves to celebrate his life."

A permanent memorial to the victims of the Arena attack is also set to be erected on a site between Manchester Cathedral and Chetham’s School of Music in the city centre.

Families of those killed have chosen a design called 'Glade of Light - A Living Memorial'.

The memorial will consist of a grove of trees, illuminated at night with a multitude of tiny lights described as a 'field of stars'.

Within the tranquil garden will also be 22 memory pools with the names of those killed in the attack and personalised messages from their friends and famiy.
