June 01--The thought of a June swoon didn't cross manager Joe Maddon's mind until it was mentioned to him Tuesday.
Maddon prefers to live in the present, and Tuesday's loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers barely put a dent in the Cubs' success during the month of May.
The Cubs finished May with an 18-10 record largely on the basis of a pitching staff that posted a 2.81 ERA. Coincidentally, the San Francisco Giants -- who were notorious for their June swoons during the late 1960s and 1970s -- posted the majors' lowest ERA in May at 2.66 to go along with a 21-8 record.
Ben Zobrist put himself in strong position for National League Player of the Month honors with a .406 batting average with six home runs and 25 RBIs and a 16-game hitting streak that ended Tuesday.
