Members of the public asked to have their say on future of Kirroughtree Forest

Forestry and Land Scotland is asking members of the public have their say on how its 10 year plan for Kirroughtree Forest is finalised.

The forest, which is three times the size of Dumfries, encompasses several ancient woodlands and is also home to one of Scotland’s world class 7Stanes mountain bike venues.

The review of the land management plan will define how FLS looks after the forest for the next decade, and will have a bearing on the 10 years after that.

FLS forest planner, Carol Finch, said: “As a popular visitor destination, recreation is always a focus for our work.

“But recently the local team has been concentrating on recovering from Storm Arwen and felling diseased larch.

“Protecting designated heritage is also a key area for us and native woodland restoration through the clearance of invasive species and regeneration work regen/invasive clearance.

“Although we’re not proposing any major changes to what we are doing, we are looking to step up our ancient woodland restoration, maintain an enjoyable visitor experience and further our work with partners to improve biodiversity.

“Achieving all of this while also continuing to see a steady supply of timber head to market is quite a challenge.”

All relevant documents, as well as guidance on how to give feedback, are online at https://forestryandland.gov.scot

However, FLS will also host two drop-in events at Kirroughtree Visitor Centre to give local residents a chance to find out more about the proposals.

The events will be staged on Wednesday, October 19 from 12pm to 4pm and Thursday, October 20 from 10am to 2pm.

Anyone who would like to find out a bit more about how the elements of forest management fit together is welcome to come along to the drop-ins.
