Member of public stopped drug dealer's escape after police chase in Leeds

A drug dealer who was caught with heroin and crack cocaine after a police chase in Leeds has been jailed.

Usaamah Qadir tripped over as he ran from officers and was detained by a member of the public during the incident in Rodley, Leeds.

Leeds Crown Court heard police officers attempted to stop a Vauxhall Corsa that the 20-year-old was travelling in on Bradford Road, Thornbury, on July 14 last year.

Prosecutor Martin Robinshaw said it was suspected that the vehicle had been involved in an offence of making off without payment at a petrol station two days earlier.

Officers signalled for the vehicle to be pulled over but it was driven off at speed.

Police managed to box the vehicle in and force it to a stop in Rodley.

Qadir ran from the car but tripped and was detained by a member of the public.

The defendant was arrested and immediately admitted that he had drugs hidden under his clothes.

He was taken to a police station where he was searched and found in possession of 30 small bags of heroin and 50 small bags of crack cocaine.

The drugs had an estimated street value of £1,050.

Qadir, of Amberley Street, Bradford, pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of class A drugs with intent to supply.

Probation officer Mick Berry said the defendant said he got into drug dealing to settle a £500 debt he owed after crashing a motorbike.

Robin Freize, mitigating, said his client, who is an apprentice engineer, is immature for his age.

Jailing Qadir for two-and-a-half years, Judge Simon Batiste said:

"The message must go out that people who involve themselves in the dealing of class A drugs will find themselves going to prison."
