Member of Heriot-Watt University tests negative after deadly coronavirus scare

Heriot-Watt has confirmed that a member of the university, who was undergoing tests for coronavirus, has been cleared of having the infection.

University officials revealed a member of Heriot-Watt was undergoing tests on Thursday, and were said to be taking "extra care" - it was reported by our sister title the Daily Record that the person tested was a man.

However, the University have now confirmed that the individual has been cleared, adding that there are no other cases at present.

In a statement on Twitter, Heriot-Watt University said: "We are pleased to confirm a member of our University community has been confirmed negative for COVID-19 (coronavirus) and is now considered to be well.

"We are unaware of any other cases. Our University continues to operate as normal, across all campuses, and the health and wellbeing of our students and staff remains our utmost priority."

More than 140 people have so far been tested for the coronavirus in Scotland, with all coming back negative.

However, health secretary Matt Hancock declared the virus, named COVID-19 by experts, a serious and imminent threat to the UK.

He said in a statement: "In accordance with Regulation 3, the Secretary of State declares that the incidence or transmission of novel Coronavirus constitutes a serious and imminent threat to public health."
