Neighbours, including Lord Melvyn Bragg, are upset by plans to build a four-storey house on the site of two garages in Hampstead
(Picture: ES)Plans to demolish two small garages to make way for a four-storey home in a Hampstead conservation area have caused outrage among local residents, including Labour peer and Radio 4 presenter Lord Melvyn Bragg.
Lord Bragg has lived in the house next door for more than 40 years and objects to the development that, if approved, would see a six-bedroom house “tower over” his home, according to Camden New Journal.
Much of Hampstead Neighbourhood’s Forum’s commentary on the planning application focuses on the impact the infill house would have on Lord Bragg’s home.
Objections include concerns over light levels. And that there is an "issue of trust" after a basement was excavated without pre-approval and a chestnut tree was destroyed during works carried out to the applicant’s house on the other side of the garages.
The “excessive” scale and “box-like design” of the house, in comparison to Lord Bragg’s smaller property, have been raised as a concern by neighbours.
